Spotify is widening access to its Managed Accounts feature, allowing families in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands to set up child accounts even on the platform's free tier.
First introduced in 2024 for paid family plans, the system gives parents more direct control over what younger listeners can hear while keeping each account experience separate.
Children using a managed account can build playlists, save favorite songs and receive personalized recommendations. Their listening activity also stays out of a parent's algorithm and does not affect annual listening summaries.
The feature includes built-in safeguards: explicit music is blocked by default, video playback is turned off, and age-gated tools such as messaging are not available. Parents can also restrict specific artists or songs and adjust preferences whenever needed.
Spotify's approach offers a middle ground between open listening and the more limited Spotify Kids app, giving families a flexible way to shape digital music habits. The company also says the rollout will expand to more countries in the near future.
This move points to a broader future where streaming platforms blend personalization with family-friendly control in a more seamless digital experience.
