SpaceX is reportedly exploring a new direction in consumer technology with a handset-like AI device prototype shown to investors. According to the report, the concept is slimmer than a typical smartphone and appears to sit somewhere between a compact phone and a dedicated AI gadget.
The device is still in an early phase, which means its final form, features, and positioning could change significantly before any public launch. The idea reflects a broader shift in the tech world, where companies are looking beyond traditional apps and screens toward more natural, AI-first interfaces.
Elon Musk rejected the report, saying it was "utterly false." Even so, the discussion highlights SpaceX's growing interest in consumer hardware and wireless connectivity, especially through Starlink Mobile. The company already has strong manufacturing capabilities through its broader ecosystem, and its access to advanced chips could support on-device AI processing.
The reported prototype also suggests a software strategy built around a proprietary operating system and technology from xAI, Musk's AI company. That approach could give the device a more independent platform, designed specifically for native AI experiences rather than relying on existing mobile ecosystems.
SpaceX is not alone in this race. OpenAI is also developing an AI device with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, showing how quickly the industry is moving toward a new generation of intelligent personal devices. Still, the market remains uncertain, as many earlier AI gadgets struggled to win broad consumer interest.
