Travis Brashears, Cameron Ramos, and Serena Grown-Haeberli, who initially collaborated at SpaceX, have come together to form Mesh Optical Technologies, a startup based in Los Angeles. The company recently secured a significant $50 million in Series A funding, spearheaded by Thrive Capital.
Mesh Optical Technologies is set to revolutionize the production of optical transceivers, essential devices that convert optical signals from fiber or laser into electrical signals for computing systems. The founders identified a gap in the market while developing advanced satellites for SpaceX, which highlighted the limitations present in current optical transceiver offerings.
These transceivers play a crucial role in data centers that support the training and operation of extensive deep learning models, enabling multiple GPUs to function collaboratively. The founders aim to manufacture up to a thousand units daily by the end of the year, paving the way for bulk orders anticipated in 2027 and 2028.
Currently dominated by suppliers from China, the optical transceiver market presents an opportunity for Mesh to establish a robust supply chain outside of this region, addressing potential national security concerns. "If AI is the most important technology in several generations, having critical components sourced from competitive countries poses a challenge," noted Thrive Partner Philip Clark.
The startup's ambition extends beyond data centers; they envision optical wavelength communications as the future of connectivity. "We aim to lead the shift from radio frequencies to photonics, aspiring to interconnect everything," Brashears stated.
