In a remarkable turn for the global spirits market, Sotheby's has reported a notable increase in its Wine & Spirits auction sales. According to their recently released 2025 market report, total sales reached an impressive $127.5 million, marking a 12% year-over-year growth.
The auction attracted a diverse clientele, with one-third of buyers being first-time participants and over half under the age of 50, representing 63 countries worldwide. Noteworthy events included a collaboration with the Distillers One of One auction in Scotland, featuring 39 rare and aged whiskies from 35 distilleries, which alone generated $3.9 million--well above pre-sale expectations.
Sotheby's also engaged in charitable initiatives, auctioning exclusive bottlings from renowned distilleries. Among these were Bowmore's Arc-54 Iridos and The Dalmore 52 Year Old Luminary No.3. A record was set in January when a 20-year-old Old Rip Van Winkle sold for $162,500, establishing it as the most valuable American whiskey auctioned to date. Nick Pegna, the global head of Sotheby's Wine & Spirits, emphasized that these results reflect the robust momentum of their business, driven by a growing international collector base.
Other auction houses are also witnessing positive trends. Unicorn Auctions, founded in 2020, reported lifetime sales exceeding $175 million and a record-setting auction in partnership with the Chicago Blackhawks, raising nearly $400,000. Christie's has also made headlines with the sale of two casks from the elusive Japanese distillery, Karuizawa, fetching a staggering £4,250,000 (approximately $5.7 million).
The outlook for 2026 appears promising across auction platforms. While general consumption of alcohol may be declining, the appetite for rare collectible spirits remains strong. Sotheby's has announced its upcoming Whisky & Whiskey auction for 2026, featuring coveted bottles such as Glenfiddich's 64 Year Old from 1937 and a two-gallon bottle of Plankinton Reserve Cedar Brook Whiskey from 1903. This trend suggests a vibrant future for collectors and the auction market, where the passion for unique spirits continues to thrive.
