Sony will end physical PlayStation game disc production in 2028, moving new releases to digital sales as PlayStation continues its shift toward online gaming.

Sony to Phase Out Physical PlayStation Game Discs by 2028

Sony has announced that it will stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, signaling a decisive shift toward a fully digital release model. From that point on, new titles will be distributed through the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers, while games released before the cutoff will remain available on disc.

The move reflects a market that has already changed dramatically. In its fiscal 2025 fourth-quarter results, Sony reported that digital downloads made up 85% of full-game software sales across PS4 and PS5, leaving physical copies at 15%. The company says the transition matches how most players now discover, purchase, and access games.

For gaming culture, the change marks the end of an era shaped by shelf collections, boxed editions, and retail browsing. At the same time, it highlights how the industry continues to evolve around convenience, instant access, and cloud-connected ecosystems.

The shift also arrives as the broader retail landscape adapts to digital-first habits. Stores once centered on disc sales have been steadily reducing their footprint as online purchasing becomes the dominant model.

Sony also said it will close the PlayStation Store for PS3 in select markets later this year, followed by wider closures for PS3 and PlayStation Vita next year. Players will no longer be able to buy new content on those systems, though previously purchased games and add-ons will remain available for download for the foreseeable future.

As PlayStation moves deeper into digital distribution, the platform is helping define a future where access, speed, and convenience shape the next generation of gaming.
