SoftBank to Invest €75 Billion in French Data Centers

SoftBank announces a €75 billion investment in French data centers, aiming to boost AI infrastructure and position France as a leader in the tech landscape.

SoftBank Group has revealed plans to allocate up to €75 billion (approximately $87 billion) to enhance data center capabilities in France. This ambitious investment aims to develop and manage an additional 5 gigawatts of data center capacity.

The initial phase will focus on constructing data centers in Dunkirk (Loon-Plage), Bosquel, and Bouchain, targeting a delivery of 3.1 gigawatts of capacity to the Hauts-de-France region by 2031.

SoftBank, recognized as both an investor in and a client of OpenAI, regards this initiative as its most significant investment in AI infrastructure across Europe. French Economic Minister Roland Lescure hailed the announcement as a reflection of President Emmanuel Macron's vision to establish France as a premier hub within the AI value chain.

While the U.S. faces rising opposition to data center developments due to environmental concerns and implications for the electrical grid, SoftBank remains committed to its expansion plans. The company has also previously announced intentions to build a data center in Ohio, supported by a new 9.2-gigawatt natural gas facility.

This strategic investment not only underscores SoftBank's commitment to advancing AI infrastructure but also positions France as a critical player in the global technology landscape. The future implications of this development could significantly enhance data processing capabilities across Europe, fostering innovation and economic growth.
