As generative AI becomes central to the digital economy, major social platforms are increasingly using user-generated content to improve their models and features. The key question for users is no longer whether AI is involved, but how much control they have over it.

Different platforms, different policies

Twitch offers one of the clearest opt-out paths, allowing creators to disable AI training on streams, VODs, clips, and chat data through account settings. LinkedIn also provides a toggle for generative AI improvement, while X lets users adjust data-sharing preferences tied to Grok and third-party collaborators.

By contrast, platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Threads follow broader Meta policies that generally use public content for AI training by default, with limited exceptions in regions such as the EU. Reddit and YouTube sit in a more complex category, where platform data can support both in-house and partner AI systems.

What users can do

Some services make privacy controls easy to find, while others bury them deep inside settings menus. On Snapchat, users can disable public-content use for generative AI. On Bluesky, the platform says it does not train its own AI models on user posts, though public data can still be scraped by third parties.

For creators and regular users alike, the safest approach is to review privacy settings, limit public sharing, and understand that public posts may be reused in ways that go beyond the original audience. As AI tools continue to expand across social media, transparency and user choice are likely to become defining standards for the next phase of digital platforms.
