SK Hynix Seeks U.S. Equipment Approval for China Facility Amid U.S. Factory Plans

SK Hynix's Solidigm unit is seeking U.S. authorization to send chipmaking equipment to its facility in Dalian, China, while the company considers building a NAND flash factory in the United States. Upstate New York has been discussed as a possible site.

The proposed equipment installation would use spare space at the Dalian plant. SK Hynix says it is not seeking to expand capacity at the facility and that the installation is proceeding in consultation with, and with authorization from, the U.S. government.

NAND flash memory is used in solid-state drives found in consumer devices and data centers. Rising demand for AI infrastructure has increased interest in memory supply and manufacturing capacity.

Any U.S. factory plan would add to the company's manufacturing footprint, while equipment approvals could shape how its existing China operations evolve. The outcome may offer a glimpse of how semiconductor makers balance global supply needs with increasingly localized production.
