San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has added more than 90 artworks to its modern and contemporary collection through purchases made between January and June 2026, alongside over 250 donated works that broaden its curatorial reach.
The new acquisitions span video, sculpture, mixed media, works on paper, basketry, photography, and architecture-related objects. Featured artists include Stephanie Comilang, Simon Speiser, Ana Mendieta, Agnieszka Polska, Betye Saar, Rose B. Simpson, Jeremy Frey, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Justine Kurland, Danny Lyon, Joseph Rodriguez, and Malick Sidibé.
The museum also strengthened its Bay Area holdings with works by Bernice Bing, Joan Brown, David Huffman, Jim Goldberg, and Adaline Kent, while donated pieces include art by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Diebenkorn, Ellsworth Kelly, Maria Lassnig, Yoshitomo Nara, Martin Puryear, and others.
SFMOMA director Christopher Bedford said the acquisitions reflect a commitment to collecting with depth and range, bringing together established voices and artists whose perspectives expand the museum's narrative of artistic innovation.
Among the highlighted works, Bernice Bing's Velasquez Family No. II, Betye Saar's House of Fortune, Jim Goldberg's Destiny's Shiny Bracelet, and Rose B. Simpson's Behold show how the collection now bridges memory, identity, material experimentation, and contemporary form. This kind of collecting can shape how future audiences understand the evolution of modern art.
