Sandstone Secures $30 Million Funding to Enhance AI Solutions for In-House Legal Teams

Sandstone raises $30 million to enhance AI tools for in-house legal teams, focusing on workflow automation and relationship management in legal operations.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of legal technology, Sandstone has made a significant stride by securing $30 million in Series A funding, announced on Tuesday. This funding round, spearheaded by Lightspeed Venture Partners, highlights the growing interest in AI-driven solutions tailored for in-house legal teams, a segment often overlooked in favor of private practice.

While competitors like Harvey and Legora have captured attention with substantial funding, Sandstone aims to address a unique niche within the legal market. The company focuses on the complex web of tasks and systems that in-house legal departments navigate daily.

Sandstone's funding comes just six months after a successful $10 million seed round led by Sequoia. The latest investment also saw participation from notable investors including Mantis VC, SV Angel, and Operator Partners, among others.

The platform is designed with small to mid-sized businesses in mind, enabling their legal teams to efficiently manage incoming requests from various channels such as Slack, emails, and Jira. Co-founder and COO Jarryd Strydom explained, "AI assists in routing and triaging tasks effectively, allowing teams to create customized workflows for executing legal work, whether that involves drafting documents, reviewing contracts, or conducting legal analyses."

Unlike traditional legal reasoning systems, Sandstone emphasizes relationship management and workflow automation, specifically tailored to the demands of in-house legal operations. Strydom noted that the focus on in-house departments allows Sandstone to deliver value where broader AI applications may struggle.

"Lightspeed's conviction in specialized vertical AI stems from the belief that a deep understanding of workflows is essential to harness AI effectively," Strydom added.

As Sandstone continues to innovate, it will also face competition from emerging AI labs like Anthropic, which is expanding its offerings in the legal sector with new tools aimed at case law research and deposition preparation.

This funding not only propels Sandstone forward but also underscores the potential for AI to transform in-house legal practices, paving the way for more streamlined and efficient operations in the future.
