Samsung Messages Set to Discontinue, Transition to Google Messages Recommended

Samsung's messaging app will be discontinued by 2026, urging users to switch to Google Messages for enhanced features and security. A seamless transition is encouraged for all users.

Samsung Messages Set to Discontinue, Transition to Google Messages Recommended

The Samsung Galaxy community is facing a significant change as Samsung announces the discontinuation of its messaging app, Samsung Messages. Users are encouraged to transition to Google Messages to enhance their messaging experience.

While the service will officially cease in July 2026, users have some time to adapt. Samsung advises that those who prefer Samsung Messages should consider setting Google Messages as their default app now to ensure a seamless messaging experience across Android devices. The company will notify users as the end-of-service date approaches.

In its announcement, Samsung highlights the advantages of Google Messages, which include features like Scam Detection, RCS messaging, and AI enhancements. These functionalities offer a more robust messaging experience compared to Samsung Messages, particularly with RCS support that allows for high-resolution media sharing and improved group chat management. Notably, RCS chats provide a level of encryption that SMS lacks, enhancing the security of user conversations.

This shift should not come as a surprise to many. Recent Samsung Galaxy devices have not included Samsung Messages preinstalled, requiring users to download it from the Galaxy Store. Additionally, newer Galaxy S26 devices will not support the app at all, and after the deadline, it will be unavailable for download.

It's worth noting that Tizen OS watches launched before the Galaxy Watch4 will not support Google Messages. While users will still be able to send and receive messages, they won't be able to view full conversations after July 2026.

Continuing Use of Samsung Messages

Interestingly, not all users will need to switch to Google Messages. Those with Android devices running version 11 or earlier will remain unaffected by this transition. This group is expected to be relatively small, given that the latest Android version is currently 16.

Furthermore, Samsung has specified scenarios where Samsung Messages will continue to function, even on devices with Android 12 or newer. Users will still be able to send messages to emergency service numbers, ensuring that critical communication remains intact. Additionally, messages can be sent to defined emergency contacts, maintaining a lifeline for users who may need to reach out in urgent situations.

This evolution in messaging platforms reflects a broader trend towards enhancing user experience through improved security and functionality. As Samsung transitions its user base to Google Messages, it sets the stage for a more interconnected and secure messaging future.
