AI infrastructure company Runware has introduced the Sonic Inference Pod, a modular data center built as a single transportable unit. The concept is designed to bring compute capacity closer to users while offering a more flexible alternative to large fixed facilities.

The company says the pod can deliver inference at lower cost and with strong performance compared with serverless inference platforms and GPU clouds. Instead of expanding a traditional data center over months or years, capacity can be added by deploying new pods, allowing the system to scale faster as demand grows.

Runware also highlights practical advantages in deployment. The pods can be installed in days, operate wherever power is available, and use a closed-loop cooling system rather than water-based cooling. According to the company, this makes the model easier to adapt to new hardware and changing AI workloads.

Flaviu Radulescu, co-founder and CEO of Runware, said the company sees distributed compute as a long-term direction for AI infrastructure. He noted that the pods are already deployed across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, with customers including Higgsfield AI and Wix.

Runware says its networked design helps route requests to available capacity and can keep services moving if one pod goes offline. The company views the model as part of a broader mission: building infrastructure that can keep pace with the rapid rise in AI inference demand.

As AI systems continue to expand, portable compute models like this could help shape a faster, more adaptable, and more distributed digital infrastructure for the future.
