Roku's latest venture into the streaming landscape is gaining momentum. Its budget-friendly subscription service, Howdy, has reportedly exceeded 1 million subscribers, as indicated by research from Antenna. This achievement is particularly impressive for a relatively new platform, signaling its appeal to viewers seeking affordable alternatives to pricey subscriptions.

Launched in August 2025, Howdy marks Roku's significant entry into the realm of paid, ad-free streaming. Priced at just $2.99 per month, it caters to audiences looking for extra viewing options without breaking the bank.

The service boasts an extensive library of approximately 10,000 hours of content, featuring a diverse mix of movies and classic TV shows, thanks to partnerships with renowned studios like Lionsgate and Warner Bros. Discovery. Popular titles available on the platform include "The Blind Side," "Mad Max: Fury Road," and "Weeds."

In addition to its attractive pricing, Roku has made Howdy easily accessible. The service recently launched a standalone mobile app and became available on Amazon Prime Video, broadening its reach and likely contributing to its rapid growth in subscriber numbers.

Antenna's data reveals that Howdy gained nearly 300,000 subscribers within its first month, continuing to add at least 100,000 new subscribers each subsequent month. Furthermore, among users who subscribed in August and September 2025, around 51% remained subscribed six months later, surpassing the average retention rates for premium and specialty SVOD services.

While Howdy's subscriber count is modest compared to industry giants like Netflix and Disney+, as well as free ad-supported services like Tubi, Roku has clarified that Howdy is not designed to compete directly with these heavyweights. Instead, it serves as a lower-cost, ad-free option that complements existing subscriptions.

As the streaming market evolves, Howdy's simple, low-commitment offering could resonate with viewers, especially in an era where subscription prices are on the rise. This innovative approach may well shape the future of affordable streaming options.
