Rivian Unveils R2 SUV: Affordable Electric Vehicle for the Masses

Rivian launches the R2 SUV, an affordable electric vehicle priced between $45,000 and $57,990, aiming to broaden EV accessibility with impressive performance specifications.

Rivian has officially revealed the details for its highly anticipated R2 SUV, marking a significant step towards making electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible. With prices ranging from $45,000 to $57,990, the R2 aims to attract a wider audience while maintaining the brand's commitment to quality and performance.

The first variant available to consumers this spring will be the R2 Performance with the Launch Package trim. This all-wheel drive dual-motor model boasts an impressive 330-mile EPA estimated range and starts at $57,990. Following this, Rivian plans to introduce a premium version later in 2026, priced at $53,990, which will also feature a dual-motor setup but with slightly reduced horsepower.

In early 2027, Rivian will launch two standard versions of the R2, distinguished primarily by their battery range. The "long range" model will offer 345 miles of range at a starting price of $48,490, while a more budget-friendly option with 275 miles of range is expected to debut in late 2027 with a price tag of $45,000.

Performance and Specifications

Across the R2 lineup, Rivian ensures a consistent experience with all trims built on a new mid-sized platform. Each variant is powered by an 87.9 kilowatt-hour battery pack and features a North American Charging Standard port. The performance launch edition stands out for its remarkable capabilities, delivering 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

In contrast, the premium trim offers 450 horsepower, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The standard long-range version, while slower at 5.9 seconds for the same sprint, enhances its appeal with a robust 345-mile range.

Rivian's R2 is positioned as a crucial vehicle for the company, aiming to balance affordability with performance. The average new car price in January was approximately $49,191, placing the R2 competitively in the market.

Customization Options

Buyers will enjoy a variety of customization options to personalize their R2. The standard model comes in a new color called Esker Silver, with additional hues like the special "launch green" available for an extra cost. Higher trims will feature enhanced interiors, including a premium audio system and heated seating options.

All R2 models will include advanced driver assistance features, with the option to upgrade to Rivian Autonomy+, which enables hands-free driving on select highways, available for a one-time fee or a monthly subscription.

As Rivian continues to innovate in the EV space, the R2 SUV represents a promising shift towards making electric mobility more attainable. This development could significantly influence the future of sustainable transportation, encouraging broader adoption of electric vehicles.
