Kaled Alhanafi, co-founder and CEO of Basata, has experienced these challenges firsthand. After moving from Jordan to the U.S. to pursue a degree in computer science, he honed his skills at Lyft and Cruise. His co-founder, Chetan Patel, brings a decade of experience in biomedical engineering from Medtronic. Their partnership emerged from a shared vision to tackle the inefficiencies in the healthcare system.

Patel's personal experience, where his wife required urgent care during a flight, highlighted the cumbersome administrative processes that delayed access to treatment. Similarly, Alhanafi faced difficulties when his father was referred to multiple cardiology practices, with only one responding in a timely manner. These scenarios reflect a widespread issue where specialty practices are overwhelmed with paperwork, leading to significant delays in patient care.

Founded two years ago in Phoenix, Basata aims to streamline this process. Upon receiving a referral, Basata's innovative system processes the incoming document and employs an AI voice agent to directly schedule appointments with patients. This approach not only enhances efficiency but also ensures that patients receive timely responses, often scheduling appointments before they leave the doctor's office.

Additionally, patients can access Basata's AI agents at any time for inquiries or administrative tasks, such as prescription renewals. Alhanafi notes that many patients are pleasantly surprised by the rapid follow-up after a referral is sent, with the goal of securing appointments swiftly.

Basata integrates seamlessly with existing electronic medical record systems, focusing initially on cardiology and urology to ensure a robust service before expanding further. The company operates on a usage-based revenue model, charging practices per document processed and call handled. To date, Basata has managed referrals for approximately 500,000 patients, with a significant surge in activity recently.

Having raised a total of $24.5 million, including a recent $21 million Series A funding round, Basata is positioned to compete in a burgeoning market. The founders emphasize their unique approach of combining various capabilities into a cohesive workflow tailored to specific specialties, setting them apart from other emerging competitors.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, the question of how AI will augment or replace administrative roles remains pertinent. For now, Basata is focused on empowering existing staff by alleviating their most repetitive tasks, thus enhancing overall efficiency. With 70% of new business stemming from referrals, it's clear that their solution resonates with those directly impacted by these challenges.
