Reddit is strategically positioning itself for further mergers and acquisitions, as revealed during its recent earnings call. CFO Andrew Vollero shared insights into the company's aspirations to acquire businesses that can either enhance Reddit's extensive reach or contribute to expanding its user base.
Vollero emphasized, "We're looking to acquire capabilities, technologies, and companies," indicating a broad spectrum of potential opportunities.
Investors expressed keen interest in understanding the specific areas Reddit is targeting for growth. During the Q&A segment, Vollero elaborated, "I wouldn't overthink the scaled opportunities. Consider it a range of possibilities." He reiterated the company's focus on acquiring innovative technologies that align with its business model, highlighting past successes in this area as a key driver of Reddit's growth.
He noted that Reddit's adtech team has excelled at integrating acquired technologies rather than developing them in-house. "This approach saves us significant time to market, and we benefit from proven products," Vollero stated, attributing these acquisitions to enhanced monetization strategies for Reddit's ad-supported platform.
While Vollero acknowledged that adtech acquisitions have proven successful, he also mentioned that Reddit remains open to exploring diverse opportunities that could complement its operations.
In its latest financial report, Reddit showcased impressive results, with $726 million in revenue, of which $690 million was generated from advertising. The platform's daily active unique users increased by 19% year-over-year, reaching 121.4 million, and its earnings per share of $1.24 exceeded expectations.
Looking ahead, Reddit is optimistic about the potential for revenue generation through its AI search product, raising questions about whether this area might also attract acquisition interest.
Reddit has been actively investing in AI technologies, including the development of an AI search engine, and has a history of acquiring startups to bolster its capabilities. Recent acquisitions include adtech firms and AI optimization tools, such as Memorable AI, which was integrated to enhance advertising performance.
This acquisition aligns with previous strategic moves made in 2022, including partnerships with AI platforms like Spell, Spiketrap, Oterlu, and MeaningCloud, all aimed at refining Reddit's advertising and machine learning functionalities.
