Reddit Embraces AI Search as a Key Growth Opportunity

Reddit is set to enhance its platform with AI-driven search capabilities, aiming to improve user experience and unlock new revenue streams through innovative technology integration.

On Thursday, Reddit announced that its upcoming AI-driven search engine could represent a significant opportunity for the platform, not only enhancing its product offerings but also serving as a potential revenue generator. During the fourth-quarter earnings call, the company shared insights into its strategy to integrate traditional and AI search functionalities, emphasizing the vast, untapped market in this area.

Reddit's leadership believes that generative AI search will outperform traditional methods for most inquiries. CEO Steve Huffman stated, "We excel at addressing queries that lack definitive answers, providing diverse perspectives from numerous users." He contrasted this with traditional search, which he described as a navigation tool to locate specific topics or subreddits. Huffman noted that large language models (LLMs) might surpass traditional methods in this regard.

The company reported a remarkable 30% increase in weekly active users for its search feature over the past year, climbing from 60 million to 80 million. Additionally, the user base for the AI-driven Reddit Answers surged from 1 million in early 2025 to 15 million by the end of the year.

Huffman remarked on the significant growth in this segment, highlighting the potential for further expansion. Reddit is actively enhancing the interface for AI answers to include richer media content, with pilot programs already in progress.

Moreover, Reddit is rethinking its identity as a social platform, aiming to transform into a go-to destination for answers. The company plans to eliminate the distinction between logged-in and logged-out users starting in Q3 2026, leveraging AI and machine learning to personalize user experiences.

In 2025, Reddit revealed its intention to merge its AI search capabilities with its traditional search engine, aiming to elevate user experiences. The company reported substantial advancements in integrating these features and has introduced five new languages for Reddit Answers, alongside dynamic agents that enhance search results with multimedia elements.

While Reddit recognizes the value of its AI responses, it is also expanding its content licensing business, which enables other companies to utilize its data for training AI models. This segment has shown growth, contributing to Reddit's overall revenue. The "other" revenue category, which includes this licensing, rose by 8% year-over-year to $36 million in Q4 and increased by 22% to $140 million for the entire year of 2025.
