Qatar is preparing to unveil a new permanent pavilion dedicated to Gerhard Richter in MIA Park, near Doha's Museum of Islamic Art. The project, titled Doha Pavilion, is scheduled to open on November 20 as part of Rubaiya Qatar, the country's new quadrennial for contemporary art.
Designed by Richter himself and developed with Selldorf Architects, the building is conceived as both an artwork and an architectural statement. According to Qatar Museums, the pavilion will present a focused selection of Richter's paintings and sculpture in a standalone space shaped around his artistic language.
Richter has said the idea grew from his 2013 visit to Doha, where the city's architecture and history inspired a structure that connects to his Strip series. The pavilion's exterior will feature tile-based patterns created through digital processes, while the interior will bring together Strip paintings, Mirrors, and the Strip Tower in a reflective display.
Selldorf described the project as a rare opportunity to help realize a major work within Richter's long and influential practice, while also contributing to Doha's expanding contemporary art landscape. Rubaiya Qatar, running from November 21 through April 2027, will include 25 new commissions and six public art installations, with a strong focus on artists from outside the Western Hemisphere.
This pavilion points to a future where art, architecture, and cultural exchange become even more closely intertwined.
