In the latest installment of Trail Tested, entrepreneur and athlete Jack Espy shares his journey as he prepares for the challenging Leadville 100 ultramarathon this August. This monthly column chronicles his experiences and the gear that supports his training for this demanding race.

With over 15,000 feet of elevation gain awaiting him, most of Espy's training has taken place on the flat roads of South Florida, where he has adapted his regimen to focus on volume rather than elevation. This unique situation has led him to explore a variety of road shoes to find the best fit for his needs.

Among the shoes he has tested, the New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V5 has emerged as a standout. This shoe features a spacious toe box, enhancing comfort during long runs. Espy notes that the immediate energy return from the FuelCell midsole makes running feel effortless, a crucial factor for ultramarathon training.

What Makes the V5 Stand Out

The V5's performance is characterized by its soft yet structured midsole, providing excellent cushioning without sacrificing responsiveness. Espy has logged significant mileage in these shoes, and they have proven to be reliable companions during his training sessions.

Other Shoes in the Rotation

During his training, Espy has also experimented with other models, including the Saucony Endorphin Azura and the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5. While the Endorphin Azura offers impressive cushioning, it fell short for Espy due to stiffness and blistering issues. In contrast, the Endorphin Speed 5 has proven to be versatile, suitable for various types of runs.

As the race day approaches, Espy plans to transition to trail-specific training, preparing for the unique challenges of the Leadville course. He will spend time in the mountains of Montana and Colorado, focusing on building strength and endurance necessary for the ultramarathon.

With a well-thought-out training plan and the right gear, Espy is on track to tackle the Leadville 100. His experience illustrates the importance of adaptability in training and the impact of choosing the right equipment in achieving athletic goals.

This journey not only highlights the significance of proper footwear but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring ultramarathoners, demonstrating that with dedication and the right tools, extraordinary challenges can be met.
