As quantum computing advances, cybersecurity specialists are preparing for a future where today's widely used encryption methods, including RSA and ECC, may no longer be enough. This anticipated turning point is often described as Q-Day.
To meet that challenge, post-quantum encryption is gaining attention as a next-generation layer of protection for VPN users. Built on mathematical problems designed to resist quantum attacks, it aims to secure data not only for today's networks but also for the computing era ahead.
One concern is the so-called "harvest now, decrypt later" approach, where encrypted data is stored today and targeted for decryption in the future. In response, the NIST finalized new post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, including ML-KEM for key exchange and ML-DSA and SLH-DSA for digital signatures.
Several major VPN providers have already adopted this direction. NordVPN offers post-quantum encryption through its NordLynx protocol, ExpressVPN supports it via Lightway, and Mullvad has integrated quantum-resistant tunneling across its platform. In many cases, the feature is available without requiring a separate premium upgrade.
For most everyday browsing, the benefit may be subtle. But for professionals handling financial records, regulated data, or confidential communications, enabling post-quantum protection can add an important layer of readiness. As quantum security matures, VPNs are likely to evolve from privacy tools into long-term digital resilience platforms.
