Perplexity Launches Personal Computer for Mac Users

Perplexity's Personal Computer app is now available for all Mac users, enhancing local AI capabilities for personal workflows and tasks.

Perplexity has officially rolled out its Personal Computer application, making it accessible to all Mac users through a desktop app, as announced on Thursday. This innovative tool serves as a response to existing local AI agents like OpenClaw, enhancing user experience by integrating AI capabilities directly onto personal devices.

The Personal Computer builds upon Perplexity's existing multi-model digital assistant, known as the Perplexity Computer. It is designed to facilitate users' workflows by allowing AI agents to interact with local files, applications, and online resources, streamlining personal tasks that require multiple steps.

According to the company, this application shifts the computing experience from a cloud-only model to one that is device-centric, where most users conduct their work. This transition aims to meet the increasing demand for local AI solutions, which can perform tasks more securely on behalf of users.

Initially introduced last month, the Personal Computer was available only to Perplexity Max subscribers and required a waitlist for access. Now, any Mac user can experience the software's features, which include the ability to manage local files, utilize native Mac applications, and operate online tools efficiently.

This software is capable of orchestrating various tools and files, utilizing over 400 connectors, and leveraging personal user contexts--all within a secure environment hosted on Perplexity's servers. When paired with Perplexity's AI-driven Comet web browser, it can operate web-based applications without needing direct connections.

Designed to run continuously on devices like the Mac Mini, the Personal Computer can also be accessed remotely via iPhone, enabling users to initiate tasks or approve requests from their mobile devices. This flexibility allows for a wide range of applications, from managing spreadsheets and documents to conducting complex projects that involve multiple materials.

As the app becomes widely available, Perplexity plans to phase out its older Mac app in the coming weeks, allowing the team to concentrate on enhancing the Personal Computer.

Currently, the new Mac application is available for direct download from Perplexity's website, although it has not yet been listed in the Mac App Store.
