Pentagon Expands Its Secure AI Toolkit with ChatGPT and Grok

The Pentagon has added customized versions of ChatGPT and Grok to its secure AI platform, opening access to generative tools for about 3 million civilian and military personnel.

These systems now sit inside GenAI.mil, a centralized portal built to let Department of Defense users work with advanced AI models while keeping sensitive information away from standard consumer channels.

According to the department, the platform has already attracted more than 1.7 million unique users. The new tools are designed to support everyday unclassified work such as drafting documents, organizing files, planning tasks, and handling logistics more efficiently.

ChatGPT Mil is built to feel familiar to regular ChatGPT users, with features centered on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. The department says more functions will be added over time.

Grok for Government is being positioned as a broader productivity tool for secure collaboration and faster workflows, with potential use cases ranging from research to supply chain coordination.

The move reflects a wider push to integrate commercial AI into secure government systems, alongside partnerships with several major technology companies. As these tools mature, they may help shape a future where trusted AI becomes a standard layer in large-scale institutional work.
