Palmer Luckey's ModRetro Aims for $1 Billion Valuation in Funding Talks

ModRetro, a vintage gaming venture founded by Palmer Luckey, is reportedly seeking funding that values the company at an impressive $1 billion. This information comes from industry sources.

The startup made waves with its inaugural product, the Chromatic, a handheld device reminiscent of the classic Game Boy, which was launched in 2024. Tech reviewer Sean Hollister praised the Chromatic, suggesting it could be the best iteration of the Game Boy to date. However, he noted the challenge of dissociating it from Luckey's background as the founder of Anduril Industries, a defense technology firm.

Hollister posed an intriguing question: "If Lockheed Martin made a Game Boy, would you buy one?" This rhetorical inquiry highlights the unique intersection of gaming and technology that ModRetro represents.

Luckey himself shared insights into the creation of the Chromatic, revealing that he had spent nearly seventeen years as a hobbyist trying to develop a Game Boy-inspired device. He described the Chromatic as a culmination of "hundreds of irrational decisions," emphasizing its role as a tribute to what made the original console so beloved.

In addition to the Chromatic, reports indicate that ModRetro is exploring the development of other nostalgic devices, including one aimed at replicating the iconic Nintendo 64.

As ModRetro forges ahead, it stands at the forefront of a revival in retro gaming, appealing to both nostalgic gamers and new audiences alike.
