Oura Expands Horizons with Doublepoint Acquisition for Gesture Recognition Technology

Oura has made a significant stride in wearable technology by acquiring Doublepoint, a startup renowned for its innovative gesture recognition technology. This acquisition, announced on Thursday, aims to enhance user interaction with Oura's smart rings through natural hand movements, utilizing a blend of artificial intelligence and biometric data. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the implications are promising.

By integrating Doublepoint's technology, Oura plans to enable users to control their devices seamlessly, making interactions feel more intuitive and efficient. In a recent statement, Oura highlighted that Doublepoint's capabilities allow devices to interpret subtle hand movements, thereby improving user experience across various interfaces. This advancement is expected to facilitate the development of new, user-friendly features that operate quietly in the background, simplifying daily routines.

Oura envisions a future where wearable AI is driven by both voice and gestures, and the acquisition of Doublepoint is seen as a catalyst for realizing this vision. The company is determined to create more ambient AI experiences that enhance everyday life.

The acquisition comes on the heels of a successful year for Oura, which has seen substantial growth in the smart ring market. Recently valued at approximately $11 billion, Oura has sold over 5.5 million rings, a significant increase from 2.5 million reported in mid-2024. With projections indicating sales could surpass $1.5 billion by 2026, Oura is well-positioned in the wearable technology landscape.

According to market research by IDC, the smart ring sector experienced a nearly 51% increase in shipments in 2025, with Oura leading the charge. The integration of Doublepoint's team, including its four founders, is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Oura's AI-driven experiences.

Tom Hale, CEO of Oura, emphasized the importance of strategic acquisitions in accelerating growth and expanding the capabilities of their devices. He stated, "Welcoming the Doublepoint team into Oura strengthens our bench with world-class talent and reinforces our long-term commitment to growing in Finland, allowing us to deliver intuitive, human-first experiences for our members."

This acquisition marks Oura's fourth in recent years, following previous purchases of health tracking startup Sparta Science, metabolic health company Veri, and digital ID firm Proxy. Each acquisition underscores Oura's commitment to enhancing its technology and user experience.
