Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's longest-serving leaders, is preparing to leave the company to start something new. In a message shared with staff, he described the move as a bittersweet transition after years of helping shape the organization's core operations.
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and spent four years as chief financial officer before becoming chief operating officer in 2022. Earlier this year, he shifted into a special projects role during a broader leadership reshuffle. Before OpenAI, he also worked with Sam Altman at Y Combinator, adding to a career closely tied to the evolution of modern AI ventures.
In his note, Lightcap highlighted the teams he helped build across Finance, Legal, People, CorpSec, GTM/Gov, and Partnerships, saying he had watched them grow under strong leadership. He also signaled that his next move will focus on new opportunities aligned with the needs of the next technological era.
The departure comes as OpenAI continues to evolve its leadership structure while preparing for a major public-market step. The company has recently seen several executive changes across key divisions, reflecting the pace and scale of transformation inside one of the world's most closely watched AI organizations.
Lightcap said he remains deeply supportive of OpenAI's mission and plans to contribute from a different perspective.
