OpenAI has outlined a massive infrastructure commitment, saying it plans to invest $750 billion through 2030 as its computing ambitions accelerate. The figure is about 25% higher than the company's earlier estimate and reflects a broader push to expand the physical backbone behind advanced AI.

The first major step in this strategy is Project Camellia, a $20 billion data center campus in Georgia. Planned for 1,400 acres northwest of Savannah, the site is expected to draw at least 3.2 gigawatts of power from Georgia Power, with capacity projected to come online between 2028 and 2032.

OpenAI says it will cover the full infrastructure and electric-service costs for the facility. The Georgia Public Service Commission has already set rules designed to keep large new users from shifting costs onto existing customers, while Georgia Power says OpenAI will also reduce its power use by up to 1 gigawatt during periods of peak grid demand.

The project also includes a 15-year property tax abatement covering 50% of the site, according to local reporting. At the same time, the company and utility have not yet detailed exactly how the campus will be powered, though regulatory filings suggest a mix of natural gas, grid-scale batteries, and solar will support new capacity across the state.

OpenAI's hiring of Brett Mayo, who previously led data center construction at xAI, signals that the company is moving quickly on execution. As AI systems grow more powerful, the infrastructure behind them is becoming just as strategic as the models themselves. This shift could shape the next era of digital intelligence and large-scale computing.
