OpenAI has introduced the Codex Micro, a $230 illuminated keyboard created with specialty keyboard maker Work Louder. The limited-edition device is designed to give ChatGPT users a more tactile way to manage AI coding agents.
Built as a compact control hub, the keyboard includes glowing Agent Keys that display agent status, customizable shortcut keys for frequent Codex actions, a joystick for common workflows, and a dial that adjusts how much computing effort an agent uses on a task.
Rather than switching between desktop tools or a phone interface, users can operate their AI workflows directly from the keyboard, which is customizable through the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI describes it as a command center for agent-driven work, while also positioning it as a limited-run collaboration rather than a mass-market release.
The company is also developing a separate hardware project: a portable, screenless smart speaker with moving mechanical elements that reportedly integrates with ChatGPT. Still in development, the device suggests OpenAI is exploring a broader hardware strategy beyond software.
As AI tools move closer to physical interfaces, products like these may help shape a future where intelligent systems are managed through more intuitive, everyday devices.
