OpenAI Unveils Lightweight Codex Model with New Chip Technology

OpenAI has launched a new lightweight version of its Codex coding tool, powered by a dedicated chip from Cerebras, enhancing speed and productivity for users.

OpenAI Unveils Lightweight Codex Model with New Chip Technology

On Thursday, OpenAI introduced a streamlined version of its innovative coding tool, Codex. This latest iteration, known as GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, is designed for enhanced speed and efficiency in coding tasks. To achieve this, OpenAI has integrated a specialized chip developed by its hardware partner, Cerebras, marking a significant advancement in the company's technological framework.

The collaboration between Cerebras and OpenAI was established last month, culminating in a multi-year agreement valued at over $10 billion. OpenAI emphasized that this partnership aims to significantly enhance the responsiveness of its AI solutions. The launch of Spark is regarded as a pivotal achievement in this ongoing collaboration.

OpenAI positions Spark as a tool tailored for quick and effective collaboration, enabling users to iterate rapidly. This model is powered by Cerebras' Wafer Scale Engine 3, which boasts an impressive 4 trillion transistors. Unlike its predecessor, the original Codex model, Spark is intended for daily productivity, facilitating swift prototyping and immediate results.

In a pre-announcement tweet, CEO Sam Altman hinted at the new capabilities of Codex, expressing his enthusiasm for the launch. He noted, "We have a special thing launching to Codex users on the Pro plan later today. It sparks joy for me."

OpenAI emphasized that Spark is engineered to minimize latency, allowing for real-time collaboration and extended task execution. This dual functionality aims to enhance user experience and efficiency in coding processes.

Having established itself in the AI sector, Cerebras recently raised $1 billion, reaching a valuation of $23 billion. The company is also considering an initial public offering (IPO) in the near future.

Sean Lie, CTO and Co-Founder of Cerebras, expressed excitement about the potential of GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, stating, "Partnering with OpenAI and the developer community, we are eager to explore the new possibilities that fast inference brings - from novel interaction patterns to innovative use cases."
