OpenAI has recently restructured its team dedicated to ensuring the development of AI systems that are safe, trustworthy, and aligned with human values. The company has transitioned the members of this team to new roles within the organization, while its former leader has taken on the position of Chief Futurist.
According to a confirmation from OpenAI to TechCrunch, the realignment comes as part of the company's routine organizational changes. The disbanded team, which was established in September 2024, played a crucial role in addressing the alignment issues associated with AI technologies, aiming to ensure they operate in accordance with human interests.
In a blog post, Josh Achiam, now serving as Chief Futurist, expressed his commitment to supporting OpenAI's mission of advancing artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity. He aims to explore how AI and AGI will influence future societal changes.
While the exact new assignments for the former alignment team members remain undisclosed, OpenAI has indicated that they will continue to engage in similar work in their new roles. This shift reflects the dynamic nature of the tech industry, where such reorganizations are commonplace.
Previously, OpenAI had a "superalignment team" created in 2023 to study long-term existential risks posed by AI, which was also disbanded in 2024. Achiam's previous role as head of this mission alignment team highlighted his dedication to ensuring a positive long-term future for humanity.
