OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot designed with stronger safeguards and learning-focused features for younger users. The launch comes as the company expands its effort to make AI more useful in education while keeping the experience age-appropriate.
Learning-first design
The new teen experience includes Study Mode, which guides users with step-by-step prompts and questions instead of simply delivering quick answers. OpenAI says the goal is to support curiosity, problem-solving, and deeper understanding.
Additional tools include quizzes, learning visualizations, and homework reminders that encourage students to stay engaged with the material. If the system detects signs that a user may be trying to shortcut the learning process, it can suggest switching to Study Mode.
Built-in safeguards
OpenAI says protections for under-18 users will be enabled by default to reduce exposure to content that may be unsuitable for teens. The company says these measures are informed by developmental science and expert guidance.
Parents and guardians can also use family tools and parental controls to manage settings, receive safety notifications, and set Quiet Hours. In addition, OpenAI has partnered with CodeAI to help teens learn how AI works, how to guide it, and how to question its responses.
OpenAI already offers a separate classroom-focused product, ChatGPT for Teachers, aimed at institution-managed AI use in schools. Together, these tools show how the company is shaping AI for different learning environments.
As teen-focused AI tools evolve, they could help define a more balanced future where digital learning is both more personalized and more responsible.
