OpenAI has unveiled a highly anticipated $100 monthly subscription plan for ChatGPT, catering to power users seeking enhanced capabilities. Previously, the pricing options included a free tier (now featuring ads), an $8 per month Go plan (also ad-supported), and a $20 per month Plus plan, which is ad-free. The newly introduced Pro plan stands out as a significant addition to their offerings.
While OpenAI's pricing page does not currently reflect a $200 monthly tier, the company has confirmed that this highest level remains available. The Plus plan continues at $20 per month, while the new Pro tier is designed to elevate the user experience, particularly for those utilizing ChatGPT's coding assistant, Codex. This Pro plan promises to deliver five times the Codex capacity compared to the Plus plan.
OpenAI acknowledges that this new pricing structure aims to compete with Anthropic, which has offered a similar $100 monthly option for its Claude service. An OpenAI spokesperson stated, "The new $100 Pro Tier is crafted to provide developers with greater coding efficiency, especially during intensive work sessions where performance is crucial. Compared to Claude Code, Codex offers superior coding capacity per dollar across its paid tiers, particularly evident during active coding tasks."
Importantly, OpenAI is temporarily extending higher Codex limits for the $100 plan until May 31. Users exploring this new tier should be aware that such generous limits may not persist indefinitely.
It's worth noting that none of the plans provide unlimited usage. However, the $200 tier offers 20 times the capacity of the Plus plan, which OpenAI assures is sufficient for "your most demanding workflows continuously, even across parallel projects." Both Pro tiers share core features, with the primary distinction being their usage limits.
Furthermore, OpenAI reports that over 3 million users are engaging with Codex weekly, reflecting a remarkable fivefold increase in the past three months, with usage surging by more than 70% month over month.
