OpenAI is strengthening its leadership team as it prepares for a possible public debut, adding two notable figures from the AI and policy worlds: Noam Shazeer and Dean Ball.
Shazeer, widely recognized for his work at Google DeepMind and as a co-author of the influential 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need", has announced his departure from Google. His career has helped shape the modern era of generative AI, especially through the Transformer architecture that now powers many advanced AI systems.
Ball, who previously served in the White House on AI policy and later returned to the Foundation for American Innovation, said he will join OpenAI on July 6 to lead a new group called Strategic Futures. The team will focus on frontier AI policy, internal governance, and long-term questions around AI's role in society.
According to Ball, the group will examine topics such as catastrophic risk, self-improving systems, labor market shifts, and the relationship between AI labs, governments, and the public. He also emphasized that internal governance will become increasingly important as AI capabilities advance.
