A new venture capital initiative, known as Zero Shot, has successfully reached its initial funding milestone of $100 million, as confirmed by its founders. This fund, deeply rooted in the OpenAI ecosystem, has already begun making strategic investments.
The name "Zero Shot" is inspired by a term used in AI training, and its co-founders include several prominent figures from OpenAI. Evan Morikawa, who previously led applied engineering for projects like DALL·E and ChatGPT, is now engaged with the robotics startup Generalist. Andrew Mayne, the original prompt engineer at OpenAI and host of The OpenAI Podcast, has also established a consultancy called Interdimensional. Additionally, Shawn Jain, a former OpenAI researcher, has transitioned into venture capital and founded his own generative AI startup, Synthefy.
Joining the founding team is Kelly Kovacs, a former partner at 01A, a growth-stage venture firm, along with Brett Rounsaville, who has experience with Twitter and Disney and is currently the CEO of Interdimensional.
These alumni have maintained strong connections over the years, collaborating during key phases of OpenAI's growth. After their tenure, they frequently received inquiries from venture capitalists and peers seeking insights into emerging AI technologies, which spurred Mayne to launch his consultancy.
The team recognized significant gaps between funded AI startups and market demands, prompting them to consider creating their own fund. "We believe we have a keen understanding of future trends and access to exceptional builders," Mayne stated, reflecting on their decision.
After securing initial commitments, including $20 million from institutional investors and family offices, the partners are now focused on achieving the full $100 million target. They have already made several investments, such as backing Angela Jiang's startup, Worktrace AI, which is developing AI-driven management software to optimize task automation.
Zero Shot has also invested in Foundry Robotics, a company innovating in AI-enhanced factory automation, which recently raised $13.5 million in seed funding. Additionally, they have a third investment in a startup that remains under wraps.
The Future of AI Investment
The founders of Zero Shot assert that their deep understanding of AI positions them uniquely in the investment landscape, allowing them to identify promising startups while also discerning which trends to avoid. For instance, Mayne expresses skepticism towards certain emerging technologies, including "vibe coding" and "digital twins," believing that existing models can often achieve similar outcomes without the need for these innovations.
With advisors like Diane Yoon, former head of people at OpenAI, and Steve Dowling, former head of communications at both OpenAI and Apple, Zero Shot is well-equipped to navigate the evolving AI sector.
This venture capital fund not only symbolizes the entrepreneurial spirit of its founders but also highlights the potential for transformative advancements in the AI industry, paving the way for future innovations that could reshape various sectors.
