From March 26 to April 4, Salt Lake City will host a captivating exhibition titled A Symphony of Disappearing Sounds for the Great Salt Lake, created by renowned Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. This immersive experience will take place nightly in Memory Grove, featuring an innovative musical composition paired with stunning light projections that illuminate a towering sphere after sunset.
The electronic score integrates field recordings of local wildlife and environmental sounds, blending archival materials with fresh recordings made specifically for this installation. By bringing the lake's natural soundscape into an urban park, Eliasson highlights the delicate balance between human existence and the surrounding ecosystem, making audible the sounds that are increasingly in jeopardy.
This installation marks Eliasson's inaugural project in the Intermountain West and serves as the grand finale of Wake the Great Salt Lake, a two-year public art initiative aimed at raising awareness about the lake's alarming decline. Collaborating with the Salt Lake City Arts Council, the Mayor's Office, and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, this initiative has showcased various temporary artworks that address the lake's pressing issues. Alongside Eliasson's work, the program has featured 12 projects by local artists, reflecting community concerns and aspirations for the lake's future.
Known for his thought-provoking public installations, Eliasson's work often explores themes of perception and environmental consciousness. His previous projects include The Weather Project, which featured a glowing sun in London's Tate Modern, and The New York City Waterfalls, which brought artificial waterfalls to the city's waterfront. In 2024, he presented Lifeworld, a visual experience that challenged viewers' perceptions of urban spaces.
The potential collapse of the Great Salt Lake poses significant ecological and economic threats to the region. A Symphony of Disappearing Sounds for the Great Salt Lake transforms art into a platform for collective listening and introspection--an invitation to reflect on what could be lost and what might still be saved.
