Nvidia has announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, the data center and power developer tied to SoftBank and OpenAI. The move strengthens Nvidia's role in the infrastructure layer supporting next-generation AI systems.
As part of the agreement, Nvidia will be the exclusive provider of compute infrastructure for OpenAI's Ports-Pike data center near Cincinnati, Ohio. The company also plans to extend up to $105 billion in credit to support construction of the facility, which is designed to expand from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts.
SB Energy's investor base already includes SoftBank and OpenAI. The project also reflects a broader shift in AI development, where chips, power, and data center capacity are becoming as strategic as software itself.
On the energy side, SB Energy plans to build a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant at the site, which sits on land owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The location has a long industrial history, and the new buildout is positioned as a large-scale infrastructure project for the AI era.
The power plant is expected to cost about $33 billion, underscoring how expensive large energy and compute projects have become as demand for AI capacity accelerates. If completed as planned, the site could become one of the most significant examples of how artificial intelligence is reshaping energy, manufacturing, and digital infrastructure together. The development may help define the future of AI-scale computing.
