NotebookLM Gains Smarter Research, Coding and File Creation Tools

Google's NotebookLM gets a major upgrade with coding, file creation and smarter web research tools, making it more powerful for study, analysis and presentations.

Google's research-oriented assistant NotebookLM has received a major upgrade, making it a more capable companion for study, analysis and content preparation. The latest version expands beyond note-based research and moves closer to a full productivity workspace.

One of the biggest additions is the ability to generate code through Google's Antigravity development platform. The tool can also export work in multiple formats, including PDF, PNG and SVG charts, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. Users can then refine those files with follow-up prompts, turning early drafts into polished deliverables.

NotebookLM now also supports a more natural starting point for research. Instead of requiring source files first, users can begin a conversation and let the system help identify relevant web material along the way. The process is now built into the main chat flow, making it faster to gather and organize information.

Another notable improvement is transparency. The assistant now shows more of its reasoning as it works, offering clearer progress updates while it searches, summarizes and structures information. That makes the experience feel more interactive and easier to follow.

The new features are currently available for Google AI Ultra subscribers, with Google saying broader access will arrive later. Early tests suggest the update can save significant time when creating research briefs, presentations and editable documents.

As AI tools become more integrated into everyday workflows, NotebookLM points toward a future where research, drafting and presentation building happen in a single intelligent space.
