Niteshift, an innovative startup focused on AI coding solutions, has successfully secured $7 million in seed funding, spearheaded by Greylock's Jerry Chen. This investment, while modest in the expansive AI landscape, has garnered attention from notable figures such as Reid Hoffman, Olivier Pomel, Alexis Lê-Quôc, Ankur Goyal, and Misha Laskin.
Founded by former Datadog engineers Sajid Mehmood and Conor Branagan, Niteshift enters the competitive AI coding arena with a unique proposition: companies should not entrust their critical code assets to major model developers like OpenAI and Anthropic, especially as these companies often compete directly with their clients.
Mehmood, who serves as CEO, draws parallels between Niteshift's mission and Datadog's early journey, where they attracted e-commerce clients wary of building on Amazon Web Services due to its dual role as a competitor. He believes that a similar trend is emerging in the AI sector, with major players like Anthropic and OpenAI encroaching on various software markets.
"At Datadog, we recognized that many e-commerce businesses were hesitant to rely on Amazon," Mehmood explained. "We anticipate seeing a similar trend as larger AI companies venture into legal, healthcare, and financial sectors."
Niteshift aims to provide infrastructure that decouples coding models from the essential orchestration required to ensure that AI-generated code is properly vetted and maintained. This approach allows businesses to select a vendor that aligns with their interests, free from competing agendas.
Importantly, Niteshift does not seek to replace existing coding agents like Claude Code or Codex; rather, it aims to reduce reliance on them. By creating an AI coding cloud that intelligently routes between various models, including open-source options, Niteshift caters to the specific needs of each project.
"The ability to switch between GPT and cloud models is crucial," Mehmood noted, emphasizing the industry's concern over being overshadowed by tech giants.
This innovative approach is what attracted Greylock's Chen, who stated, "As the frontier labs advance, there's a chance to provide customers with an alternative path, unbundling their agents from the infrastructure they operate on. Niteshift is developing a platform that facilitates this for coding agents, empowering customers to invest in their developer tools without being tied to a single model or vendor."
Unlike many competitors, Niteshift does not sell tokens but instead offers infrastructure services, charging clients on a per-minute basis, similar to a cloud provider. "While others are focused on labor replacement intelligence, we are providing software to agents rather than humans," Mehmood clarified.
Despite entering a saturated market of AI coding tools, Niteshift's founding team brings invaluable experience from their time at Datadog, equipping them to tackle the challenges faced by large engineering organizations in managing AI-generated code effectively.
