New Museum Celebrating José Teixeira's Art Collection Set to Open in Portugal

A new cultural landmark is set to debut in Portugal this April, centered around the contemporary art collection of José Teixeira, the chairman of dstgroup, a prominent civil construction and public works engineering firm. Located in Braga, approximately an hour's travel from Porto, the museum will feature an impressive array of 1,500 artworks, aptly named MUZEU--Thought & Contemporary Art dst.

The collection emphasizes artists and works that delve into profound poetic, philosophical, and political themes, addressing critical issues such as memory, power, identity, labor, resistance, and freedom. Notable artists showcased include Pablo Picasso, Anselm Kiefer, and Richard Long, alongside talents like Nan Goldin, Candida Höfer, and Paula Rego, among others. The museum's official opening is slated for April 25, promising a vibrant celebration of contemporary art.

The inaugural exhibition, titled "Abrir Abril" or "Open April," commemorates the anniversary of Portugal's Carnation Revolution, which marked the end of a long-standing dictatorship in 1974. This exhibition draws inspiration from the work of German historian Reinhart Koselleck, exploring revolution as more than just political events but as a transformative historical experience that reshapes social relations and future visions.

On the opening day, visitors can expect a dynamic street performance called Poetry Is in the Street, created by the artist collective Oficina Arara and performance artist Doutor Urânio. This event will kick off an exciting series of activities at MUZEU, including conferences, live performances, jazz concerts, philosophy workshops for children, and guided tours. The museum aims to establish itself as a vital public platform for contemporary art, fostering mediation and critical thought within the broader European cultural context.
