Netflix Reschedules Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia' Film for Enhanced Theatrical Experience in 2027

Fans of C.S. Lewis's enchanting world of Narnia will have to wait a bit longer for the much-anticipated film, "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew." Originally set to debut during Thanksgiving, the release has now been shifted to February 12, 2027.

This upcoming film marks a significant milestone for writer-director Greta Gerwig, as it will be her first project following the success of "Barbie." Moreover, it signifies a bold move for Netflix in its ongoing efforts to strengthen its ties with traditional movie theaters.

Previously, Netflix had announced that "The Magician's Nephew" would exclusively grace Imax screens for two weeks prior to its streaming release, a strategy that showcased a more ambitious approach for the streaming giant. However, with the new timeline, the film is now set to have exclusive Imax previews starting February 10, 2027, followed by a broader theatrical release two days later, positioning it as a "global eventized release." Streaming will commence on April 2, 2027.

While Netflix has not provided specific details about the theaters that will feature "The Magician's Nephew," Imax has emphasized that this delay will facilitate a comprehensive theatrical window, likely appeasing major cinema chains.

Notably, AMC Theatres has recently celebrated the success of its screenings for the "Stranger Things" finale, indicating a willingness to collaborate further with Netflix. This partnership reflects a shift in Netflix's approach to theatrical releases, moving away from its previous reluctance to commit to exclusive theatrical windows.

The film boasts a stellar cast, including Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep, and adapts one of the later entries in Lewis' beloved fantasy series, exploring the origins of Narnia.

In her announcement, Gerwig expressed her long-standing admiration for the book, recalling how she was captivated as a child by the "gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life."

This strategic delay and commitment to a theatrical release could redefine Netflix's relationship with cinemas, potentially paving the way for a new era of collaborative film experiences.
