Kompas VC unveils a new €160 million fund, emphasizing a tailored investment strategy in a fragmented global landscape, focusing on sustainability and industrial challenges.

Navigating Investment in a Fragmented World: Kompas VC's Innovative Approach

In today's complex landscape characterized by cultural disparities and geopolitical challenges, investors are tasked with finding startups capable of achieving substantial growth. Kompas VC, a venture capital firm, has crafted a regionally nuanced investment strategy to address these hurdles. Recently, the firm announced the launch of a new fund totaling €160 million ($187.5 million), as reported by TechCrunch.

According to Sebastian Peck, a partner at Kompas VC, the world is increasingly divided into three major economic and political spheres: the U.S., Europe, and China. Each of these regions is on a distinct trajectory, which requires tailored investment strategies.

Kompas has built its reputation on supporting startups that tackle essential challenges in industrial competitiveness, including manufacturing, supply chains, and sustainability. While these themes remain relevant, their emphasis varies across different regions.

Peck notes that while interest in these areas surged in 2021, the investment landscape has shifted dramatically by 2026, now focusing heavily on artificial intelligence and rapid growth sectors. "Our commitment lies in the physical realm, particularly in startups that prioritize decarbonization, productivity, and risk management," he explained, emphasizing that Kompas has carved out a unique niche in the market.

This niche is expansive, as the trend of reshoring is gaining traction across various markets. Depending on the startup, there is often ample opportunity for Kompas to engage effectively.

Despite being smaller than some venture funds, Kompas's new fund positions it to lead early-stage investments with check sizes between €3 million and €5 million. As a European fund, it has access to a diverse array of founders and startups, but must also consider how global fragmentation could impact potential returns. For instance, while prefab housing is popular in Scandinavian countries, it has not yet gained traction in Germany or the broader European market.

Peck acknowledges that while prefab housing is an intuitive and scalable solution, its limited acceptance in other regions stems from "cultural conditioning" rather than technological barriers. He emphasized the need for careful analysis of market size when considering investments outside Scandinavia.

The fragmentation of markets extends beyond housing, with sustainability still a key interest in Europe, contrasting with its declining appeal in the U.S. However, Peck remains optimistic, recognizing that investment horizons span 10 to 15 years, allowing for potential shifts in legislative and market dynamics.

This evolving landscape, while presenting challenges, also opens doors for specialized investors like Kompas. "There's significant potential for focused, smaller funds like ours to be the first to invest in emerging themes and collaborate with visionary founders," Peck concluded.
