Forty artworks spanning centuries and styles will feature in "Collected," an exhibition opening at London's National Gallery on May 22, 2027. The works include pieces by Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, Lucian Freud and John Constable.
The collection has entered public ownership through two UK schemes administered by Arts Council England: Acceptance in Lieu and Cultural Gifts. They allow qualifying cultural objects to be transferred to the nation in exchange for tax-related benefits.
From Picasso to Magritte
Highlights include Picasso's "The Weeping Woman" (1937), Freud's "Portrait of Hermione Scott" (1960), and Magritte's "La condition humaine" (1935). The exhibition also brings together works attributed to Rembrandt, Paul Cézanne, Peter Doig and Guercino, as well as Picasso ceramics and Chinese porcelain.
"Collected" runs through September 5, 2027, before travelling to the National Galleries of Scotland, the Ulster Museum in Northern Ireland and Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales. The exhibition offers audiences across the UK a chance to encounter works from varied periods and artistic traditions. Such shared access can help cultural collections reach wider audiences and shape how future generations engage with art.
