Museo Reina Sofía Initiates Inquiry Following Visitor Incident Involving Israeli Symbols

The renowned Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid announced on Monday its decision to pursue an investigation regarding a recent incident that garnered significant attention. This event involved visitors displaying Israeli flags and Stars of David within the museum premises.

The situation became widely discussed after footage of the event circulated online, showing security personnel directing the removal of three women from the museum. During the escort, one officer indicated that "certain members of the public are being disturbed" by the presence of these visitors.

Reports suggest that prior to the incident, other attendees had shouted derogatory remarks at the women, with some media describing this as "racist harassment." The video, lasting nearly a minute and a half, does not provide context for the events leading up to the confrontation. It remains unverified whether the women were indeed tourists from Israel.

Israeli media outlets also covered the story, confirming that the individuals involved were likely Israeli tourists. In response to the incident, several Israeli politicians voiced their concerns. Dana Ehrlich, the Israeli ambassador to Spain, expressed on social media that the expulsion of the women for their symbols was unacceptable, highlighting the historical significance of the Israeli flag.

The European Jewish Congress echoed this sentiment, labeling the incident as "troubling and unacceptable," and raising alarms about potential discrimination in a public cultural institution.

A spokesperson for Museo Reina Sofía confirmed that the museum has requested its security department to investigate the matter further. They emphasized the institution's commitment to equality, religious freedom, and a strict policy against any form of discrimination, including antisemitism. The museum staff is trained in fundamental rights and conflict resolution.

The museum reiterated its acknowledgment of the vital contributions made by Jewish artists and supporters throughout its history, particularly in relation to avant-garde movements that have shaped its collection.

This incident is not the first controversy surrounding Museo Reina Sofía. In the past, the museum faced criticism for hosting a series of events titled "From the River to the Sea," which some Israeli officials deemed antisemitic. Following public backlash, the museum altered the program's name to "Critical Thinking Gatherings" and issued an apology.
