Moonshot AI's Kimi 3 Could Narrow the Gap with Top Frontier Models

Moonshot AI's upcoming Kimi 3 is expected to challenge top frontier models, strengthening China's position in open-weight AI and attracting fresh investor interest.

Moonshot AI's Kimi 3 Could Narrow the Gap with Top Frontier Models

Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI is preparing the next version of its Kimi model family, and early expectations suggest it could match -- or even exceed -- the performance of Anthropic's Opus 4.8, according to reporting cited by the Financial Times.

The company's previous Kimi K2 models have already gained strong traction in the open-weight AI ecosystem, earning high benchmark results and showing capabilities that place them close to leading frontier systems.

The upcoming Kimi K3 is expected to push that progress further. Reports indicate it may become the largest open-weight AI model developed in China, with a parameter range between 2 trillion and 3 trillion, and could arrive within days.

Moonshot AI is also reportedly seeking new funding, with a potential valuation of $31.5 billion. Earlier in May, the company raised $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation, reflecting growing investor interest in open AI platforms.

The broader industry is increasingly weighing the value of closed-source AI services against more affordable open models. As open-weight systems from China continue to improve, companies are looking more closely at flexible alternatives that can be adapted to their own needs.

This momentum suggests a future where open AI models play a larger role in shaping how businesses build, customize, and scale intelligent products.
