Mistral AI Secures €3 Billion to Expand Europe's Sovereign AI Ambitions

French AI company Mistral AI has closed a massive €3 billion funding round, lifting its valuation to more than €21 billion. The Series D round is being described as the largest equity raise ever completed by a European technology company.

The investment was led by Samsung Electronics, with the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity joining as co-leads. The round also drew support from a broad international group of backers, underscoring the company's growing global appeal.

Mistral says the new capital will help expand its compute capacity, strengthen infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth and widen its international reach. The company is also sharpening its identity as an AI lab focused on frontier research, open-weight models and user control rather than a consumer chatbot clone.

One of its key priorities is sovereign AI: building systems that let governments and enterprises decide where data is processed and which models are used. Mistral has already introduced tools that allow customers to choose regional processing locations and has begun hosting third-party open-weight models to broaden its services.

The company now operates in 20 countries and continues to position itself as a European technology champion with global ambitions. Its strategy reflects a wider shift in the AI sector, where infrastructure, control and regional independence are becoming as important as model performance.

With major partners from Europe, the United States and Asia, Mistral is emerging as a symbol of a more distributed AI future, where innovation and digital sovereignty can grow side by side.
