Mistral AI Eyes €3 Billion Funding at €20 Billion Valuation

Mistral AI is in talks to raise €3 billion, aiming for a €20 billion valuation, as it positions itself as a leading European AI alternative.

French artificial intelligence pioneer Mistral AI is reportedly in the early stages of securing approximately €3 billion (around $3.5 billion) in funding, as reported by Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources.

This new funding round could elevate the company's valuation to about €20 billion (approximately $23.15 billion), nearly doubling its previous valuation of €11.7 billion from a Series C funding round last September.

Founded in 2023, Mistral has quickly emerged as one of Europe's leading AI startups, with a mission to democratize access to advanced AI technologies. Unlike many of its American counterparts, Mistral adopts a more open strategy in AI development, providing foundational large language models with open weights. This allows users to customize these models to meet their specific needs.

In addition to its open offerings, Mistral also delivers specialized closed models designed for various applications, including programming, voice cloning, and optical character recognition.

As European nations seek to reduce their dependence on American technology, Mistral has positioned itself as a more accessible and "sovereign" alternative. The company is currently establishing a data center near Paris and has formed partnerships with France's military, the government of Luxembourg, and several prominent European organizations.

Despite its ambitions, Mistral has raised approximately $4 billion to date, which is significantly less than the funding amassed by U.S. competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which have raised $186 billion and $161.25 billion, respectively. This disparity reflects the broader gap in revenue generation, model adoption, and enterprise demand between American and European AI labs.

Mistral has not yet responded to requests for further comment.
