Mistral AI Acquires Koyeb to Enhance Cloud Capabilities

Mistral AI makes a strategic acquisition of Koyeb to enhance its cloud services and AI infrastructure, marking a significant step in its growth strategy.

Mistral AI Acquires Koyeb to Enhance Cloud Capabilities

Mistral AI, a French company recently valued at $13.8 billion, has made a significant move by acquiring Koyeb, a startup based in Paris. This acquisition marks Mistral's first step into expanding its cloud services, as Koyeb specializes in simplifying the deployment of AI applications at scale while managing the necessary infrastructure.

While Mistral has gained recognition for its development of large language models (LLMs), this acquisition highlights its ambition to become a comprehensive player in the AI landscape. In June 2025, Mistral unveiled Mistral Compute, an AI cloud infrastructure service, and hopes that Koyeb will enhance this offering.

Koyeb, founded in 2020 by three former employees of the French cloud provider Scaleway, has focused on enabling developers to process data without the complexities of server management, a concept known as serverless computing. This approach has become increasingly relevant as AI demands have escalated, leading to the introduction of Koyeb Sandboxes, which create isolated environments for deploying AI agents.

Prior to the acquisition, Koyeb's platform already facilitated the deployment of models from Mistral and other sources. Following the acquisition, Koyeb's team and technology will assist Mistral in deploying models directly on clients' hardware, optimizing GPU usage, and enhancing AI inference capabilities, as outlined in a press release from Mistral.

The acquisition will see Koyeb's 13 employees and co-founders join Mistral's engineering team under the guidance of CTO and co-founder Timothée Lacroix. Koyeb's platform is expected to evolve into a pivotal component of Mistral Compute in the coming months.

Lacroix expressed that "Koyeb's product and expertise will expedite our advancements in the Compute sector and contribute to the establishment of a genuine AI cloud." Mistral is intensifying its cloud initiatives, recently announcing a $1.4 billion investment in data centers in Sweden to meet the rising demand for alternatives to U.S. infrastructure.

Koyeb has successfully raised $8.6 million to date, including a pre-seed round of $1.6 million in 2020 and a $7 million seed round in 2023 led by the Paris-based VC firm Serena. The acquisition is viewed as a crucial step in building a sovereign AI infrastructure in Europe.

Thanks to geopolitical factors and its commitment to aiding enterprises in harnessing AI, Mistral has recently surpassed $400 million in annual recurring revenue. Going forward, Koyeb will also focus on enterprise clients, discontinuing new sign-ups for its Starter tier.

While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Mistral's CEO Arthur Mensch indicated at a recent conference that the company is actively hiring for various infrastructure roles, promoting itself as a European-based organization engaged in cutting-edge research.
