Experiencing sluggish internet speeds can be frustrating, but now, Windows 11 users have a convenient way to check their network performance directly from the operating system. Microsoft is currently testing a new feature that allows users to perform network speed tests without leaving their desktop.

A Convenient Shortcut for Speed Testing

As part of its latest update for Windows 11 Insiders in the Release Preview Channel, Microsoft has introduced a network speed test tool. However, it's more accurate to describe this feature as a shortcut rather than a standalone application. To access it, users simply right-click on the network icon in the taskbar and select the "Perform speed test" option. This action opens the browser, directing users to a simplified speed test interface powered by Bing, regardless of their default search engine.

Interestingly, while many might assume this tool is a Microsoft innovation, it is actually powered by Speedtest, a well-known service in the field of internet speed analysis. This integration is not entirely new; Speedtest has been available through Bing since December 2023. The latest update merely makes this tool more accessible through the Windows taskbar.

While this feature adds convenience, a fully integrated native application could enhance the user experience further. Many users may prefer the comprehensive capabilities of the complete Speedtest tool over the simplified version accessible via the taskbar.

Additional Features in the Update

The new speed test shortcut is just one of several enhancements included in this update. Microsoft has also introduced new settings for pan and tilt adjustments for connected cameras, along with an exciting array of new emojis. Additionally, the Widget settings menu now occupies a full page, and users can set .webp files as their desktop backgrounds without needing to convert them first.

These features are available to those who join the Windows Insider program. While there is a risk of encountering unstable software, the Release Preview Channel offers a more stable experience compared to the Dev or Beta channels, as the updates have undergone extensive testing.
