Microsoft and Amazon Expand Cloud Gaming With New Access Models

Microsoft and Amazon are expanding cloud gaming with new access models, from ad-supported Xbox streaming to Luna integration on Fire TV devices.

Microsoft and Amazon Expand Cloud Gaming With New Access Models

Microsoft and Amazon are taking fresh steps in cloud gaming, each targeting a different kind of player with a new access model.

Microsoft tests ad-supported play

Microsoft has begun testing a free cloud-gaming option for Xbox users enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program. The trial lets players stream select cloud-compatible games they already own without a Game Pass Ultimate subscription, but each session starts with ads. For now, playtime is limited to one hour per session, making the experiment a short-form, accessible entry point for gaming on phones, laptops, and consoles.

Amazon brings games closer to Prime Video

Amazon is also reshaping how games are discovered by integrating Luna into Prime Video on Fire TV devices. A new Games tab now sits alongside Movies, TV Shows, and Sports, giving Fire TV users a more visible path into titles such as Hogwarts Legacy, EA Sports FC 26, and Clue. The move is designed to make gaming feel like a natural part of everyday entertainment browsing.

Together, the two companies show how cloud gaming is evolving in two directions at once: one focused on flexible access for existing players, the other on bringing casual audiences into the gaming experience through familiar streaming platforms. This shift may help define a more seamless future for interactive entertainment.
