Microsoft Acquires Cove's Team to Enhance AI Collaboration Tools

The innovative team behind Cove, a startup supported by Sequoia Capital that specialized in AI-driven collaboration, has officially joined Microsoft. This transition was communicated to Cove's customers, informing them that the platform will cease operations on April 1, with all user data set for deletion.

Founded in late 2023 by former Google Maps engineers Stephen Chau, Andy Szybalski, and Mike Chu, Cove raised $6 million in seed funding from notable investors including Sequoia Capital and Elad Gil. The startup developed an infinite whiteboard tool that utilized AI to assist users in generating task-specific blocks, such as for trip planning. The founders aimed to enhance flexibility in AI interactions, believing that a canvas interface was superior to traditional chat formats.

Cove's platform also integrated features like a built-in browser, PDFs, and images, allowing users to enrich their AI interactions with context, leading to the creation of new cards, tables, and lists. The startup positioned itself in a competitive landscape, facing rivals like Miro and TLDraw.

In their announcement, Cove expressed excitement about continuing their mission at Microsoft, emphasizing that their vision for reimagining AI collaboration will thrive within the tech giant's ecosystem. They stated, "When we started Cove, we set out to reimagine how people collaborate with AI. As model capabilities have accelerated, our conviction in that mission has only grown stronger."

Microsoft has previously integrated AI features into its collaboration tools, including the addition of Copilot to its Whiteboard product in 2023. The Cove team's expertise is expected to further enhance Microsoft's offerings in this domain.

As the tech landscape continues to evolve, the integration of Cove's innovative approach to AI collaboration into Microsoft's suite of tools may pave the way for more dynamic and effective ways of working together in the future.
