Meta's New AI Image Tool Puts Instagram Privacy Settings in Focus

Meta's Muse Image brings AI image creation to Instagram, while also putting public-photo reuse and privacy controls at the center of the conversation.

Meta's New AI Image Tool Puts Instagram Privacy Settings in Focus

Meta has introduced Muse Image, a new AI feature that lets users create original visuals, edit photos, and build custom ads inside its apps. The launch also brings a notable privacy question into the spotlight.

The feature can use images from public Instagram accounts when a user tags that profile in the creation process. Private accounts and accounts belonging to users under 18 are excluded automatically, but public profiles may be included unless the owner changes their settings.

How users can limit reuse

Instagram users who want to reduce this type of reuse can open their profile, tap the menu in the top-right corner, choose Sharing and reuse, and turn off the option that allows others to create with and reuse their content for both posts and reels.

The rollout reflects how quickly generative AI is becoming part of social platforms. At the same time, it highlights the growing importance of clear consent tools, simple controls, and transparent data practices as digital creativity becomes more interactive.

Public attitudes toward AI remain mixed, and features like this are likely to keep privacy design at the center of product innovation. In the future, stronger user controls may shape how social platforms balance creativity with trust.
